John is a retired teacher/librarian and has also been doing freelance writing since the late 1970s. Over this period of time, he has had articles appear in numerous regional and national publications. His article, "The Grey Wolf: Tom Dennison of Omaha" won the James L. Sellers Memorial Award for Outstanding Original Contribution Published in Nebraska History for 1977. He is also the author of an 8th grade Nebraska history text that was used for several years in Nebraska schools.

In the last three years he has been a frequent contributor to Suite101.com and also has had articles appear in Associated Content, Constant Content, and Epinions.
